HOME

Commissioned in April 1944 she first saw action as part of the legendary Captain Johnny Walkers 2nd Escort Group screening the Western approaches to the D Day landings in Normandy. She with other ships in her group were responsible for the demise of at least 6 U-boats.Up to May ‘44, the group had consisted of six Bird class sloops but three were now being deployed elsewhere in readiness for the Normandy invasion, and their place in the group being taken by the new “Lochs”. Post war years 1946-1952 she was part of the Londonderry Flotilla know to those on board as the 'Red Hand Gang'.1953 saw her in the hands of Portsmouth dockyard for modernisation and re-armanment. Twin 4" replaced the single 4". Single Bofors the Orlikons and twin Bofors the Pom-Pom. 1955 took her to the first of a number of general service commissions in the Persian Gulf and in one notable incident she was involved in the transportation into exile of Archbishop Makarios of Cyprus to the Seychelles. On the next three commissions she and her sister ships carried a detatchment of 25 Royal Marines as part of the ships company. Which has to be a first for a ship of her size
